Calling

Palm Sunday

The shortest sermon on the subject in the world - probably.  What is heaven like?  What will happen there?  Will it be like an everlasting church service?  Anyway, here it is, with fond memories of Ian who inspired it:

Before he died, a friend asked me about heaven.  I never did get to answer him.  What I wished I'd said was this:

Do you remember being in your Mother's womb, how comfortable, secure and fascinating it was?  Every day a new sound, a new touch, a new sensation.  And then came days of discomfort as you tossed and turned, finally settling upside down, your world crowding you in, and a terrible sense that it was all for nothing, that there was no more to learn, no more to grow.

And then pain, unbearable pain, crying, shouting, and you were pushed from life into the nothingness of outside.

Outside; a place you had occasionally experienced through sounds. A voice, yes, mostly that voice that sometimes broke through the swooshing and thump thump thump that was your world.  A voice that you wanted to love but couldn't quite hear, a voice detached from your life, a voice that you sometimes feared, sometimes longed for.  The light is dazzling, your lungs burst with delight at the new sensation of air, but soon all becomes calm.  The light diminishes and your eyes adjust.  The warmth returns, the thump thump thump returns, but everything else has changed.  The swooshing that blocked out all other sound is gone, and you hear the voice, so clearly, the voice you longed for.  And you see her face, the one who has waited for you, cried for you, laughed with you, suffered for you, and she speaks to you and you know you are loved, you know that outside is real and you are safe.  And you are still the same, but transformed, you've cast off your old covering.  And this world is so familiar and yet so totally different; you could never have imagined it or described it, but for now you relax and sleep.
