Accessibility at St Peter’s
St Peter’s is 900 years old and a bit
tight for space so we can’t offer all mod cons, but we have tried to make the
building accessible to all. If you
become aware of something we could improve, please let us know and we will
try to fix it. If you need any assistance
whilst you are visiting us, please ask. Organising an event yourself?

everyone can participate
Wheelchair Access?
We have dedicated parking opposite the church door. Access to the inside of the church is smooth, with no steps. Again, there is a slight slope. Access to the altar for communion is via a ramp (it’s not very steep
but we do recommend you ask someone to be ready to steady the chair or assist
if necessary). The candle stand is at
the side of the ramp and is usually accessible to a wheelchair user. The memorial book is currently behind the
candle stand; please ask if you would like us to move it so you can see
it. There is space in the chancel
for turning - it is tight but our regulars are used to jumping out the way so
don’t worry about reversing over someone.
The nave aisle is very narrow and you may find it easier to go to the
back of the church to turn round on the return trip. We are quite adept at bringing communion to
you – positioning their chair near the middle of the altar rail is what our
regulars seem to prefer. Our Ministers
will also bring communion to your seat if you prefer to stay in the main part
of the church – please ask the sidesman (the person telling people when they
can go up to the altar) to tell us. The toilet (in the churchyard) is accessible to wheelchairs, (see
below). Toilets?
There is a toilet in the churchyard. It is part of the Radar scheme for disabled
access or you can ask for a key in the church. As there are so many keys KNOCK before
entering and lock the door when you are inside (we can over-ride the lock if
necessary). The initial part of the path through the gate is quite steep so
please ask if you need any assistance.
The wide door opens outwards to give you more space inside; it is not
sprung. The light switch is on a low
pull-cord to your right as you enter.
The toilet is a good height, has grab rails, plenty of space for
wheelchair turning and an alarm cord if you get into trouble (the alarm goes
off outside and attracts a posse of burly ‘young’ men). Sound Reinforcement?
The service leaders and readers use microphones, which are connected to loudspeakers and a loop system. Unfortunately, we do not have a signer in the regular congregation. If you were able to bring your own they would be very welcome to join the Ministers at the front to enable you to participate fully in the service. Large
Print?
All the
service sheets are in large print (16pt Times New Roman like this) and
Notices and Hymn books are readily available in large print also. We also have
extra large print books (24pt like this) for all the main services. Please ask at the door if you need a larger
print than the normal. Other Concerns?
Our motto is “Everyone is welcome at St
Peter’s.” If it doesn’t work out like
that and you need us to fix something please ask. |
