Service
of Thanksgiving and Baptism
The first section (in blue) is used
if you have not had a separate Thanksgiving service.
It gives you an idea of the format of these but is shorter:
Introduction Optional
Hymn or song The blessing of Christ comes to you in N. His blessing is mercy, kindness and
joy. Blessing comes to home and
family. The Minister addresses the parents: Do you receive N as a gift from God? Parents:
We do. Will you do all that you can to give N a
loving home, a living faith and the care and nurture that he needs? Parents:
With the help of God, we will The minister addresses
the supporters/godparents and says Will you do all
that you can to help and support these parents and their child? Will you pray for them, listen to them and
support them in their life together? Supporters:
With the help of God, we will. The minister
addresses the wider congregation and says People of God,
will you do all that you can to help and support this family? All: With the help of
God, we will. The Baptism Service
Faith is the gift of God to
his people. In baptism the Lord is adding
to our number those whom he is calling.
People of God, will you
welcome N and uphold him/her in his/her new life in
Christ? All: With the help of God, we will. A reading from the bible
The minister says to the
parents and godparents: In baptism, God calls us out
of darkness into his marvellous light.
To follow Christ means dying
to sin and rising to new life with him.
Therefore we ask: (These
questions are sometimes asked by children) Do you turn to Christ? P&G: I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? P&G: I repent of my sins. Do you renounce evil? P&G: I renounce evil. The
family and godparents come to the font.
Praise God who made heaven
and earth, All who keeps his promise for ever. Let us give thanks to the
Lord our God. All It is right to give thanks and praise. Father, we give you thanks
and praise for your gift of water in creation; for your Spirit, sweeping over
the waters, bringing light and life; for your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
baptized in the river Jordan. We bless
you for your new creation, brought to birth by water and the Spirit, and for
your grace bestowed upon us your children, washing away our sins. May your holy and life-giving Spirit move
upon these waters. Restore through them the beauty of your creation, and
bring this child who is to be baptized to new birth in the family of your
Church. All
Amen. Let us affirm our common
faith in Jesus Christ. (These
questions are sometimes asked by children) Do you believe and trust in
God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? All
I believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in
God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? All
I believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in
God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ
known in the world? All
I believe and trust
in him. This is the faith of the
Church. All This is our faith. We believe and trust
in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The minister takes the
child and asks: Name this child Parent:
N The baptism and signing
with the cross: N, I baptize you in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen. The
Minister or a godparent makes the sign of the cross on the child’s forehead. N, Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. The minister says
Do not be ashamed to confess
the faith of Christ crucified. All: Fight valiantly as a disciple of
Christ against sin, the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to
the end of your life. The minister says May almighty God deliver you
from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead
you in the light and obedience of Christ. All:
Amen. Optional Hymn or song
We sit for the
prayers. A
prayer of thanksgiving for the child.
A prayer for the parents. A
prayer for the wider family We finish our prayers by
saying the Lord’s Prayer together in its traditional form: Our Father, who art in
heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy
kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And
lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For
thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. We
welcome N into the family of faith: There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism. By one Spirit we are all baptized into one
body. All: We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; we are children of the
same heavenly Father; we welcome you. A Baptism candle is presented to the family
usually be the grandparents or great grandparents God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a
place with the saints in light. You have received the light of Christ; walk
in this light all the days of your life. All: Shine as a light
in the world to the glory of God the Father. The minister says a prayer of blessing and
we depart. |
